Role overview

This engineer will build and extend the Python services behind AI features - endpoints, data access, ingestion and retrieval jobs, and the integration points to foundation model APIs - and will also implement the front-end surfaces for a new AI Playground that ACD engineering will develop for rapid prototyping and experimentation, before implementing it in customer-facing UI.

The work is majority backend; the front-end capability matters because it means features get delivered whole rather than handed across a seam.

This is a delivery role on a small team, working to patterns set by the AI Engineering Lead and senior backend engineer rather than defining architecture.

The expectation is steady, tested, production-ready output with growing independence over the engagement.

Key responsibilities:

• Build and maintain Python API endpoints and service logic (FastAPI or equivalent) backing AI features, following established patterns for request validation, streaming responses, timeouts, retries, and structured error handling.
  
  
• Implement the front-end features in Angular or React - streaming and incremental response rendering, loading and partial-failure states, and responsive layouts for the AI Playground and customer-facing UI.
  
  
• Write and maintain SQL against relational stores, Python against other NoSQL or object data stores.
  
  
• Write automated tests as a normal part of delivery: unit and API tests on the back end, fixture-based tests for model-dependent paths, and contributions to regression suites running in CI.
  
  
• Add logging, metrics, and tracing to the services and jobs owned so failures and performance regressions are visible without a customer report.
  
  
• Fix defects on owned features through to root cause, including issues surfaced in production.
  
  
• Collaborate with the AI Engineering Lead, Senior Backend Engineer, Product, and UX in a distributed team, using written updates and asynchronous communication as the default.
  
  

Required skills and qualifications:

• 5+ years of professional software development experience delivering production backend services and web application user interfaces.
  
  
• Strong Python for production backend work: REST API development, async basics, testing, and debugging in a real codebase - not scripting or notebook-only experience.
  
  
• Hands-on experience with FastAPI, Flask, Django, or an equivalent Python API framework.
  
  
• Working proficiency in a modern front-end framework - Angular or React - sufficient to build and modify feature-level UI independently.
  
  Angular is preferred, as it is used in ACD’s existing platform.
  
  
• Comfort with TypeScript/JavaScript and browser fundamentals including async behavior and debugging.
  
  
• Solid SQL and relational data modeling: joins, indexing basics, schema changes, and migrations.
  
  
• Experience with Git-based workflows, code review, and CI/CD pipelines.
  
  
• Strong written English and the ability to work effectively with a US-based team.
  
  

Must have skills:

• Strong Python backend development with REST APIs and FastAPI/Flask/Django.
  
  
• Hands-on Angular or React with JavaScript/TypeScript.
  
  
• Strong SQL, relational databases, data modeling, and API integration.
  
  
• Experience with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, debugging, and production support.
  
  

Desired attributes:

• Exposure to AI/LLM features, model APIs, RAG/retrieval, or streaming interfaces.
  
  
• Knowledge of Azure, Docker, and cloud deployment.
  
  
• Experience with background jobs/queues such as Celery.
  
  
• Strong problem-solving, communication, ownership, and ability to work with distributed/US-based teams.
  
  

Good to have skills:

• Exposure to AI or LLM-backed features - calling model APIs, prompt handling, retrieval-backed search, or streaming and conversational interfaces.
  
  
• Vector databases or embedding-based retrieval.
  
  
• Azure cloud services, Docker, or exposure to cloud deployment workflows.
  
  
• Background job and queue processing (Celery, or equivalent).
  
  
• C# and .NET familiarity, which are core to ACD’s existing product platform.
  
  
• Accessibility (WCAG) and front-end performance work.
  
  
• Fluency with AI-assisted development tooling in day-to-day work.
